UAS Pilot Basic Courses in Open Category

EASA RE 2019/947

Get trained with our UAS Pilot Courses to successfully face the AESA exam, which will allow you to fly your drone in open category in an accredited way, according to the new European EASA Regulation.

As stated in the RE 2019/947 of the new European UAS Regulation, from January 2021 there will be a minimum requirement to fly drones, either recreationally or professionally.

What has changed in UAS training with the New European Regulation 2021?

As you may know, with the entry into force of the new European Regulation 2021 for drones (UAS), there have been several changes to the pilot training system:

  1. You must have a minimum amount of certifiable training to fly drones over 250 gr.
  2. The training, which will be demonstrable by taking an online test at AESA, will depend on the category in which you want to operate.
  3. There is no longer a distinction between recreational and professional flying; with your registration and certification, you will be a pilot as well as an operator.
  4. Your certification will allow you to fly throughout Europe.
  5. To fly professionally, the minimum age is set at 16 years. However, you can fly your drone recreationally from the age of 14; or from the age of 12, as long as you are accompanied by an adult to supervise the operation.

Why do you need a UAS Pilot Course?

Both to pass the official AESA exam and to be able to fly safely, you will need to have a general knowledge of UAS, regulations or operational procedures. Don’t forget that a drone is an aircraft and, as such, must be flown responsibly.

In our Open Category or Specific Category UAS Pilot courses, you will learn everything you need to know and we will guide you through the process of registering as a UAS Pilot with AESA to obtain the minimum certificate required:

UAS Pilot
BASIC LEVEL 1
A1/A3

To fly drones up to 25 kg (classes C0 – C4), subcategories A1 and A3 in open category.

UAS Pilot
BASIC LEVEL 2
A2

To fly drones up to 4 kg (class C2), subcategory A2 in open category.

UAS Pilot
PROFESSIONAL
LEVEL 3

To operate drones up to 25 kg (classes C5 and C6), under a standard scenario of the specific category (STS-01 for VLOS and STS-02 for BVLOS).

In addition, if you want to work as a drone pilot and operate professionally, you will need at least UAS Pilot Level 1 certification, as an indispensable first step after the entry into force of the new European EASA Regulation.

UAS PILOT LEVEL 1 – A1/A3 BASIC COURSE

14 h. of theoretical-practical training

The UAS Pilot Level 1 Course consists of theory and practice. The theoretical part and the subsequent exam at AESA, will certify you to fly drones in subcategories A1 and A3 throughout Europe. In addition, if you need it, the practical part will give you the necessary fluency to fly your drone with confidence and safety.

Theoretical content

Level 1 – A1/A3

The theoretical part of the course lasts 5 days (together with Level 2 – A2 course), with guided classes from 17:00 to 20:00. In addition, you have the option of attending in person (classes with reduced seating capacity according to COVID-19 security protocol) or following the instructor’s explanation live over the Internet.

Likewise, all the course material will be available on our virtual platform so that you can study it in detail and from wherever you want.

And to ensure that you understand the contents, you will take different progress tests that will also serve as a simulation for the final A1/A3 AESA exam.

The topics you will learn during the theoretical part of the UAS Level 1 Course are:

→ Air safety.
→ Airspace restrictions.
→ Aviation regulations.
→ Human Factors limitations.
→ Operational procedures.
→ General knowledge of UAS.
→ Privacy and Data Protection.
→ Insurances.
→ Physical security.

The AESA exam, which consists of 40 multiple-choice questions, will focus on the subject matter studied and will assess the acquired knowledge that will enable you to safely operate your drone.

Flying practices

The practical part of the Level 1 UAS Pilot Course lasts 2 hours, in which you will see specific aircraft theory and fly the UAS with an experienced instructor (3 batteries).

You can also schedule this part of the course on the day of your choice (subject to instructor availability and weather).

If you have just purchased your new drone, or have been given one as a gift, and want to learn from a professional pilot, this phase will be especially useful for you.

UAS PILOT LEVEL 2 – A2 BASIC COURSE

14 h. of theoretical-practical training

The UAS Pilot Level 2 – A2 course also consists of theory and practice. In the theoretical part, you will expand on the knowledge acquired in Level 1, and explore new content related to flying drones in areas close to urban areas.

After this, you will be able to take the AESA exam that will certify you to fly drones in A2 subcategory throughout Europe. Plus, if you need it, the practical part will give you the confidence to fly your drone safely and confidently.

Theoretical content

Level 2 – A2

The topics you will learn during the theoretical part of the UAS Level 2 Course are:

→ Meteorology.
→ UAS Flight Performance.
→ Technical and operational ground risk mitigations.

The AESA Level 2 exam consists of 30 multiple-choice questions, which will assess the knowledge acquired.

The theory lasts 5 days (together with Level 1 – A1/A3 course), with guided classes from 17:00 to 20:00, in which you can also choose to attend in person or follow the instructor’s explanation live via the Internet.

In addition, as in Level 1, all the course material will be available on our virtual platform and you will take different progress tests that will serve as a simulation for the final A2 AESA exam.

Flying practices

To obtain the Level 2 – A2 certificate, AESA requires self-certification of certain hours of practice, as well as a perfect knowledge of the drone user manual.

In the practical part of our UAS Level 2 Basic Course, in addition to receiving support in the process and the preparation of documentation, you will learn safety and avoidance manoeuvres that will allow you to take your skills as a pilot further.

Requirements to obtain the Open Category Drone Certificate

✓ For the Basic Course Level 1 – A1/A3 all you need is to be over 16 years old. You don’t need any previous experience, no medical certificate, nor do you need to have your own drone (although it is recommended).

✓ For the Basic Course Level 2 – A2 the only requirement is to have the Level 1 certificate.
